So I'm new to the whole smoking scene and went out and bought an electric smoker to learn on. I smoked a pork butt and used only apple wood chips. I only added chips to the smoker 3 times over the whole 12 hour cook time. When the butt was finished I really did not get a smoke taste out of it, I'm not sure if it was because I only used apple chips or what it may be. Any advice would be appreciated.

What brand of smoker did you buy?  That might aide in the responses.  My only experience with electric smokers was with one made by Cook Shack. Owners manual suggested using two 1 inch by 2 inch disks of wood for a twelve hour smoke and to not open the door during the process because it takes about 30 minutes for the heating element to recover.  The problem with chips is they burn quickly and once the smoke is gone, they're gone.  Soaking in water doesn't help much.  The first smoke you see is steam coming from the wood.  You might get some chunks of wood and try those.   Apple wood creates a great flavor, but like most fruit wood, it will darken your meat, so I would advise going lightly, perhaps one or two chunks added per time.
