I am new here. I want to remind you fellas of what you already know... always open all doors on your propane smoker before lighting it. I made a careless mistake Saturday and I’m paying for it. It blew up in my face. I have the Masterbuilt 30” vertical. I switched tanks, started it up, and went for a swim next door. Came back to check on it and the temp dropped. I opened the bottom door and saw it had gone out. I turned the gas to high and hit the ignite button. WHOOOOF! A bed red flash came out of the bottom door and got me. 2nd degree burns on my lips and nose and cheeks. Singed the hair on my chest and face.
Before Saturday, I knew to open the doors. But I was exhausted after working in the sun all day and made a careless mistake. The regulator tripped when I switched tanks. The flame went out but it was still trickling gas into the cooking chamber. The damper was closed. Creosote buildup had further clogged the damper. I am lucky it was only a quick flash of heat.
I bet I don’t do that again.
Just be safe and always remember to do it the safe way. Don’t mess around. God bless and keep cookin’.
